Snapdragon 8 Elite 5 Confirmed as Qualcomm’s Next Flagship Soc

After multiple rumors and leaks, Qualcomm finally revealed the name of its next flagship CPU. It won’t be named Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, nor will it come as Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2. Recent rumors also suggested that it would launch as Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, but that mouthful name isn’t making the final cut. In fact, the new chipset will carry the Snapdragon 8 Elite 5 moniker.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite 5 Coming September 23

Some may ask why Qualcomm is skipping four generations, since we had only one Snapdragon 8 Elite. The fact is that the first Snapdragon 8 Elite broke the former naming scheme. Its predecessor was called Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, so if Qualcomm were to follow the previous naming scheme, last year’s chipset should have come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. The fact is that with the new name, Qualcomm is merging the old and the new, in a bid to make things (hopefully) less confusing.

The next Snapdragon 8 Elite 5 will come as the fifth chipset in the lineup since the 2021 naming change. It’s “an evolution of its established framework” and not a complete change. The company will unveil the Snapdragon 8 Elite 5 at its Snapdragon Summit in Maui, Hawaii, which starts on September 23.

The SD Elite 5 will come with custom Oryon CPU cores. There will be a prime CPU core clocked at 4.6 GHz. The “for Galaxy” or Extreme Edition versions are set to reach 4.7 GHz. Qualcomm’s upcoming chip will also offer a new GPU that reportedly reaches up to 1.2 GHz. As per the leaked benchmarks, the device scores 4.2 to 4.4 million in AnTuTu. The chip will feature TSMC’s N3p 3nm process.
There are also rumors of a cost-effective version of the chip coming with Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. It would be a better fit for some flagship killer smartphones, like, for example, the OnePlus R series. Of course, Qualcomm is yet to confirm this new variant.

Xiaomi 17 – The First Flagship With the SD8 Elite 5

The new chipset is expected in a plethora of new flagships. We expect the new wave of flagships to pop out soon after Qualcomm’s reveal. In fact, Xiaomi has just confirmed that the Xiaomi 17 series, its next flagship lineup, wil launch as the first smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite 5 chip.
